On a day without unexpected delays or difficulties, the wagon trains could cover about 10 to 15 miles (15-25 km). On a bad day, they might not even move an inch. Once on the trail, the travelers were on their own. Dangers had to be faced as a group, or all would fail. Any hardshipâ whether hunger, sickness, injury, severe weather, buffalo stampedes, or broken equipment-had to be overcome using whatever resources were available within the group, or with the help of a company that was close by on the trail. With only their fellow travelers to help them, the overlanders had to be prepared for anything.
